December 7th, 11:30 a.m. and we were on our way to the most Southern point of Korea, Jeju Island. During the trip I got to catch up with a friend I had met at the YFU (Youth for Understanding) introductions and meet new people from all over the world. At the arrival we fitted ourselves in a van for eight with the nine of us. So no leg space but that didn’t press the fun.
The first stop wasn’t far. Since it was a weekday the garden was not crowded and worth the trip. We could fully enjoy it because of the nice weather and also went into one of the many lava tunnels in Jeju. You could see how the lava had slowly made its way through the earth there. At the end of the tunnel was a sign, which said that thanks to the Micheon cave(미천굴) spirit we would stay healthy for 365 days which was also the distance we walked underground. Well, we would appreciate that.
After taking at least a hundred pictures, we went back on our way to our guesthouse. Even though it was dark, we could still see the lights of the boats at sea and enjoy the beach for a bit. For dinner we had pork meat, which was delicious. After that we had the genius idea of going to a karaoke/noreabang. For two hours we sang until our throats were sore, and we knew we would feel it the day after. Again, worth it. So, after a long day we finally got into our beds.
7:00 a.m. and after 4 hours of sleep, we were on our way yet again to another cave. This one was a whole lot bigger than the first. But every tunnel has its end and so we went on to the next stop. After driving over half the island we arrived at Seongsan(성산). Okay, it was a bit touristic but still the area was very beautiful especially when we reached the top of the mountain. While catching breath and taking more pictures, we were asked by other tourists to take pictures with them. Afterwards we went on a cruise around one of the nearby island and also tried the dried squid for the first time.
We did not know that Jeju had a signature fruit until our guide took us for Hallabong(한라봉) ice-cream. Our next stop for the night was still far away, and in between we went to a waterfall. Even though it was dark already, we could still enjoy it. Afterwards we went to the E-mart to get some groceries for our BBQ. In the end, we reached the pension at 8 ‘o clock p.m. and enjoyed ourselves around the barbeque. After a while, all the food was eaten but we were still a bit hungry. Now comes one of the reasons why foreigners love Korea: Late night delivery. I mean eating chicken at 1 ’o clock, with something that suits it of course. ;) After having negotiations with our guide about how late we could wake up the next morning and having talked/eaten for hours we finally climbed in our beds early in the morning.

A few hours later we woke up again, had breakfast and headed out to our last day on this amazing island. We were all awfully tired but as soon as we stepped out of the car and into the park at sea, we got some energy back. Walking past the palm trees we got the feeling we were in California instead of Korea. But most impressive were the jet black cliffs in there hexagon shapes. These shapes were caused by the volcanic activities on the island which had pushed up and formed the pillar like stones you can see today. On our way back to the car we passed a stall that sold Beondegi (번데기). Those larvae, we foreigners love to take pictures of, but are too scared to eat ourselves most of the time though. Of course… our guide bought some for us to try.
By the time we finally found a place to eat, we were really hungry. We had all voted for pizza so that’s what we got. After having finished four pizza’s, we set off again to our last stop, a mountain nature reservoir. It was kind of a sad place with its’ frozen plants and swamp. We were, nevertheless, happy to actually see snow. After getting a few pictures and cold feet, we were on our way again to the airport. No time for dinner but we weren’t hungry anyway. Instead of that, we did shopping for souvenirs. Well, we mostly shopped for chocolate. The way back we were tired but content with our time on Jeju.
